RATCHADAMNOEN KNOWLEDGE & CULTURE AVENUE

Location: Ratchadamnoen Road, between Ratchadamnoen Nai and Ratchadamnoen Klang Roads, on the site of the old lottery office.

Project Overview: OKMD is leasing the space to develop it into a library under the TK PARK brand. This space will be connected with various learning areas through workshops, as well as exhibition spaces and an auditorium. It will also connect with Ratchadamnoen Road and nearby historical areas.

Concept: The core concept is the design of an Urban Living Space for the Rattanakosin Island area. The design envisions elevating the library to the 3rd floor at the highest level to provide a panoramic view of Ratchadamnoen Road from the Democracy Monument to Sanam Luang. The interior space is designed with curved slopes in both the plan and section, creating a unique space that connects with the curves found in traditional Thai architecture, which has evolved over time from the Ayutthaya period through the forms of significant buildings. The design aligns with the facades of buildings along Ratchadamnoen Road on both sides.

Facade Design: The facade design is the central element of this architectural work. It incorporates details from important buildings around Sanam Luang, such as the walls of Wat Phra Kaew, the Fine Arts Department, the National Museum, and the City Pillar Shrine. These elements are simplified into a single, minimalistic form, replacing decorative cornices with sunshades. The new design symbolizes a blend of Neo-Classical art and the ongoing renovation of building facades along Ratchadamnoen Road.

Urban Void: A central portion of the building facing Ratchadamnoen Road and Sanam Luang is designed as an urban void to connect to Khao San Road and the Banglamphu community behind the building. This design integrates the public space on the ground floor with the library on the 3rd floor, enhancing vertical connectivity. The project aims to rejuvenate life through learning activities and to symbolically represent contemporary architecture on Rattanakosin Island in the current reign.
